Tennis News: Petra Martic crush Olga Danilovic to win the Ladies Open Lausanne
Petra Martic of Croatia won the championship match against qualifier Olga Danilovic of Serbia 6-4, 6-2 to win the title at Ladies Open Lausanne in Lausanne, Switzerland, on July 14
Petre Martic had won consecutive matches twice in the ongoing season before advancing to the fourth round at the 2022 Wimbledon. She defeated three seeded players, Nuria Parrizas Diaz, Belinda Bencic and Caroline Garcia, to book a spot in the championship match at the Lausanne Open.
The match had a cagey start, with both players exchanging breaks in the first seven games. However, the 31-year-old Croatian soon took complete control of the game to win nine of the final 11 games of the match, securing her victory after one hour and 29 minutes of play. Olga Danilovic had an opportunity to bounce back in the second set at 3-2, but Petra Martic did not falter and broke the serve of the Serbian to move ahead.
Petra Martic served six aces, fired 23 winners to 10 unforced errors, and won 72% of the points on the first and 72% on the second serve while committing only two double faults. In contrast, Olga Danilovic served three aces, won 62% of the points on the first serve, 33% on the second and committed three double faults.
In a post-match interview, Petra Martic said, "I think I played pretty consistent from the beginning until the end. Yesterday and the matches before, I couldn't do that and I had a few drops. Today, I tried to stay sharp and not let her get back in the match."
She added, "It is hard to describe how I feel now. It is just nothing short of amazing."
It was the second tour-level title of Petra Martic's career, with her previous title coming at the Istanbul Open in 2019. The victory improved her Win-loss record in the finals to 2-3. She also levelled her win-loss record against Olga Danilovic to 1-1, with the Croatian losing in their previous meeting at the Australian Open in 2021.
