Indomitable Iga Swiatek signs off on superlative 2023 WTA season
The 2023 season was another year for Iga Swiatek to remember as she continued on the path to greatness.
The 2023 season was another year for Iga Swiatek to remember as she continued on the path to greatness.
The Pole notched up her fourth grand slam title at the French Open, won the WTA Finals, the Masters 1000 China Open as well as three other titles to finish the year as world number one. . . again.
Going 67-12 for the season will likely win you a lot of silverware. Swiatek converted six out of the eight finals she reached into winners' cheques, many in dominating fashion. Because when Swiatek is on fire, she is nigh unplayable.
For example, the recent WTA Finals featured the creme de la creme of women's tennis, but Swiatek was simply in another category. The world number one blitzed the tournament without dropping a set, handing three bagels to opponents, including a landslide 6-1 6-0 scoreline in the final against Jessica Pegula.
It was a similar story at the 2023 French Open in June, where Swiatek dropped just one set on her way to her third Roland Garros title. She boasts Rafael Nadal-esque numbers in Paris, going 28-2 since her debut in 2019. In fact, that set Swiatek lost to Karolina Muchova in the final this year broke a run of 27 straight sets on the hallowed Parisian clay.
And at just 22, there is surely much more to come from the Warsaw native.
On Tuesday, Swiatek took to Instagram to recap her season and show some appreciation for those who helped her through another glittering season.
"What a season that was," she captioned.
"I saw, did and learned so much. Before I start my much-needed vacation, I would like to leave here some words of appreciation, gratitude and some thoughts.
"I would like to thank my team. I wouldn't be in this place without you. I want to thank everyone who supports me every day through the ups and downs of every season.
"Last but not least, I want to thank the amazing women I compete with on tour. Thanks to you, I constantly want to be a better player. Every one of us has our own story and we can tell those stories together through our sport. I'm grateful for you and for this opportunity.
"The best things happen to us when... we stop chasing them."
