Iga Swiatek marks her return to action with a comfortable win at the Italian Open
World No. 1 Iga Swiatek began her title defence at the Italian Open with a comfortable 6-3, 6-0 victory over Elena Gabriela-Ruse
The 20-year-old Polish tennis player is having a great season. She has not lost a match since losing against Jelena Ostapenko at the Dubai Open in February. Her recent win against Romanian Elena-Gabriela Ruse marked her 24tch consecutive victory since 2015 when Serena Williams created a streak of 27 back-to-back wins.
She has picked up four titles for the current season. She won the Qatar Open after defeating Anett Kontaveit in the final, Sunshine Double at the Indian Wells against Maria Skkari, and Miami Open over Japanese tennis star and four-time major champion Naomi Osaka and Stuttgart Open to start her claycourt season, defeating Aryna Sabalenka and Emma Raducanu along the way.
Iga Swiatek missed the Madrid Open as she had to take a 2-week break from tennis due to a shoulder injury. She made her comeback on May 11 with a comfortable straight-set victory against Elena Gabriela-Ruse to secure a spot in the third round of the Italian Open.
Iga Swiatek dropped the serve twice in the first set after returning to the court for the first time after two-and-a-half weeks. However, she managed to break Elena Gabriela-Ruse's seven out of 12 times, winning the match with ta second set bagel within just one hour and eight minutes.
After the win, Iga Swiatek commented, "I'm pretty proud I could get into the rhythm today, take some lessons during the match, and improve my game by game. That was a pretty solid match for me. I think she's playing excellent tennis. I could feel that today on my racquet, she could give back some strong hits.
Rafael Nadal believes Iga Swiatek is playing fantastic tennis.
After Iga Swiatek won against John Isner, Rafael Nadal said, "She's doing amazing things" no? I think she played fantastic and won every event she played, the last four in a row. Winning Indian Wells and Miami in a row is something difficult.
Iga Swiatek is looking to win the title at Rome in back-to-back years and her fifth season title. She will next face former World No.1 Victoria Azarenka on May 12 to secure a quarter-final spot in the Italian Capital.
