Iga Swiatek is still the world's no. one; she defeats Donna Vekic in the San Diego final
Iga Swiatek has won yet another title this season and has maintained her WTA the world's no. one ranking by defeating Donna Vekic 6-3, 3-6, 6-0 in the San Diego final
This was the ninth time this season that Iga Swiatek has reached the finals in a WTA tour, maintaining her world's no. one rank to date, and this was her eighth WTA title this season.
Commenting on the difficulty of the final, Swiatek said, "It was a really tight match and pretty long."
"We felt the intensity for sure. At the end I wanted to be the one who played the last ball in," she added.
Vekic has now moved up to 47 in the WTA rankings after reaching the San Diego Open finals. Her serving skills are outstanding, which was Swiatek's biggest challenge.
Owing to Vekic's terrific talent, Swiatek lost the second set; however, she went all in the decider set and won to claim yet another title this season.
Fighting for her eighth title this season, Swiatek had defeated Jessica Pegula 4-6, 6-2, 6-2 in the San Diego semi-final to qualify for this WTA tour final.
The matches were severely delayed due to heavy rains. Swiatek's competitor in the finals couldn't be decided until Sunday when Donna Vekic made it to the finals after winning the semi-final.
"Knowing how well she can serve, I just wanted to be more loosened up on my return games - not think too much, use my intuition and fight for every ball," said Swiatek while discussing the toughness of the game.
Iga Swiatek has already won three grand slam titles, and this is her eighth title of the season and 11th title of her career.
With Serena Williams bidding goodbye to Tennis in this year's US Open, it may not be wrong to suggest that Iga Swiatek is all set to take her place.
Swiatek won two Grand Slam titles this season: the US Open and the French Open, and lost only one of the nine finals that she played this season.
Swiatek has maintained her position at the top of the WTA rankings with her eighth title.
