World No. 81 Bernarda Pera of the United States won against World No. 2 Anett Kontaveit of Estonia 6-2, 6-4 to win her second consecutive title at the Hamburg European Open at Am Rothenbaum in Hamburg, Germany, on July 23
Bernarda Pera went into the Hamburg European Open after winning her maiden title at the Hungarian Open last week. She advanced to the championship match in Hamburg without dropping a single set at the WTA 500 tournament. The victory against Anett Kontaveit earned her the second WTA title of her career and extended her winning streak to 12 matches and 24 sets.
In an on-court interview, Bernarda Pera said, "It feels amazing. I am playing good tennis. I am happy that I got rewarded for it. I have been working hard for a long time. I felt good in practice, but I was not able to execute that in matches. Then something changed. I relaxed a little bit. By winning one match over another, the confidence grows."
Bernarda Pera won 79% of the points on the first serve and broke the serve of her Estonian opponent four times in the first eight service games compared to 61% of the points on the first serve and one break point off four opportunities by Anett Kontaveit.
The Croatian-born American Bernarda Pera cruised through the first set 6-2. She raced to a comfortable lead in the second set but failed to secure the match point on her first attempt. However, she made no mistakes after dropping a point in the 10th game and clinched the final four points to secure her victory after one hour and 14 minutes of play.
The victory made her the fifth player to win consecutive WTA titles this season, joining Ons Jaberu, Iga Swiatek, now-retired Ashleigh Barty and Beatriz Haddad Maia.
