German Open: Ons Jabeur and Belinda Bencic Advance to Berlin Quarter-finals
World No. 4 Ons Jabeur defeated Alycia Parks of America 6-2, 7-6 (10/8) in the second round of the German Open at Westenergie Sporthalle in Halle, Germany, on June 16 to secure a quarterfinal spot
Ons Jabeur became the first African Arab woman to win a WTA 1000 title last month. With the victory against Alycia Parks, the No. 1 seed Ons Jabeur has now advanced to the eighth quarterfinal of the ongoing season.
Alycia Parks started the match strongly, but Ons Jabeur soon found her footing and took advantage of drawing mistakes made by her American opponent to comfortably win the first set 6-2 with the help of brilliant service games.
The second set was much more challenging for Ons Jabeur as Alycia Parks raised her game to take a 2-3 lead. However, the 27-year-old Tunisian broke for 3-3. She used excellent backhand slice shots to save a breakpoint at 3-4. She fought hard for every point until her efforts paid off as she sealed her victory on her fifth match point.
Ons Jabeur fired 13 winners to 17 unforced errors compared to 18 winners and 31 unforced errors by Alycia Parks.
In a post-match interview, No. 2 seed Ons Jabeur said, "The second set, she started to play much better, and I had to take my chances when I had the break. It's tough. I should have taken my chances when I was serving. I knew if it was going to be 6-5. It would be tough for me. But, I am glad I stayed calm afterward".
Belinda Bencic beats Anna Kalinskaya to reach her sixth quarterfinal of 2022
Swiss tennis sensation Belinda Bencic won against Anna Kalinskaya of Russia 6-4, 1-6, 6-1 in the second round of the German Open at Westenergie Sporthalle in Halle, Germany, on June 16 to secure a quarterfinal spot.
The match had a cagey start as both the players exchanged points to make it 4-4, when Anna Kalinskaya faltered and committed two double faults, allowing Belinda Bencic to take advantage and close out the first set 6-4.
Belinda Bencic started well in the second set as she tried to build the momentum, but Anna Kalinskaya pulled off a reversal in the second set with her shots. She won six of the next seven games, sending the match into a decider.
Belinda Bencic regained control of the game in the third set and raced to a 5-1 lead. She then fired her 35th winner of the day with a forehand down the line to secure her victory.
