Geneva Open : Richard Gasquet Stuns Daniil Medvedev
After returning to Tennis after almost six weeks for the Gonet Geneva Open, Medvedev must have been hoping for a win
Medvedev, who holds world rank 2, lost to Richard Gasquet from France 6-2, 7-6(5), the 75th rank worldwide. Gasquet was in the mood to win from the very beginning. Though Daniil summoned back his excellent form by the end, Gasquet didn't seem intimidated by his opponent. He stood firm on his ground and took every chance to score. Despite a big crowd of more than 4000 people cheering for the world's no. 2, Gasquet's complete focus was on the game and the game only.
The last match Medvedev had played was the quarterfinals of the Miami Open, where he lost to Hubert Hurkacz. Immediately after that defeat, he underwent a minor hernia procedure that forced him to stay away from the game for six weeks. Reports say he was feeling incredibly well and strong after the surgery and was all set for Tuesday's match. The scene on the court was quite different, though. He might have decided to return to the game earlier than required. After defeating world no. 2, Gasquet's next match against world no. 81, Kamil Majchrzak, maybe a piece of cake.
Ruud Breezes Past Paire In Geneva
This Wednesday, Casper Ruud, world no. 8, defeated Benoit Paire 6-2 6-3 at the Geneva Clay. Though an incredible start by Paire showed Ruud breaking down in the third game, Paire's form didn't last quite long. Soon Ruud took over and didn't give Paire any more opportunities to dominate him. On the one hand, Ruud showed accuracy and strength, and on the other hand, Paire was seen struggling to remain consistent in the game.
Owing to Paire's inconsistent game and Ruud's terrific form, Ruud saw a 55-minute victory at the Geneva Open. While commenting on his win, Ruud said, "Everything went my way a little bit. I was broken at the beginning, so it was not the best start, but then I found my game a little bit better and got some free points here and there."
Ruud will be playing against Thanasi Kokkinakis in the quarterfinals. He is hoping to secure an eighth tour-level title in the Geneva Open.
