French Open Update : Iga Swiatek cruises past Lesia Tsurenko to reach round two
World No. 1 Iga Swiatek defeated Lesia Tsurenko of Ukraine 6-2, 6-0 at Stade Roland Garros on May 23 to kickstart her French Open campaign with a straight-sets victory
Iga Swiatek showed why she is an established favourite for the Roland Garros title by wrapping up the match in just 54 minutes with a brilliant display of her impenetrable defensive skills with highly accurate and powerful groundstrokes. The 20-year-old Polish tennis sensation extended her winning streak to 29 matches by beating the Ukrainian.
After the victory, Iga Swiatek said, "It was a pretty good match. I want to keep going. I know the streak will someday stop, but I am just focusing on my game, not the numbers.
Iga Swiatek has dominated women's tennis since reaching the Australian Open semifinals in January and has won the last five tournaments she competed. She previously won the title at Roland Garros in 2020 but could not defend it in 2021 and lost it to Czech tennis player Barbora Krejcikova.
Emma Raducanu beats Linda Noskova to reach round two
British tennis sensation Emma Raducanu made her French Open debut with a hard-fought 6-7(4), 7-5, 6-1 victory against Linda Noskova at Court Simonne Mathieu on May 23.
U.S. Open champion Emma Raducanu went into Paris after retiring from a first-round match at Rome Open due to a back issue. It was the first match between 19-year old Emma Raducanu and 17-year-old Linda Noskova, who won the girls' singles title at Roland Garros last year.
The Czechian went into the first step aggressively, hitting 48 winners compared to 24 by Raducanu. However, the British teenager showed impeccable grit to claw her way back into the game to lose the opening set 6-7(4) in a tiebreak.
Emma Raducanu swung the match's momentum in her favour after she broke Linda Noskova in the 12th game of the closely contested second set. She consolidated a 4-1 lead after getting a decisive break and saving a breakpoint in the final set. Raducanu then won five straight games to secure a spot in the second of the French Open.
Emma Raducanu will face Aliaksandra Sasnovich of Belarus for a place in the third round on May 25.
Barbora Krejcikova fails to defend Roland Garros title
Defending champion Barbora Krejcikova of the Czech Republic lost 1-6 6-2 6-3 to French teenager Diane Parry to end her title defence in the first round after spending most of the season on the sidelines to an elbow injury.
Diane Parry ended her first match against a top-10 player with a remarkable win in front of a home crow, making her the lowest-ranked woman to beat a No.2 seed at Roland-Garros since Arantxa Rus.
