French Open: Top seed Iga Swiatek beats Jessica Pegula to advance to semi-finals in Rome
Polish sensation Iga Swiatek defeated Jessica Pegula of America 6-3, 6-2 in a quarter-final match at Stade Roland Garros on June 1 to advance to the semi-finals of the French Open
Unstoppable Iga Swiatek won her 33rd consecutive match with a straight-set victory, moving to the Roland Garros semi-final for the second time. Iga Swiatek had a shaky start but soon broke the serve of her American opponent with a forehand winner. However, she was immediately broken back and showed signs of nervousness. The pair traded breaks again, and the Pole broke for 4-3 before easing past the No.11 seed Jessica Pegula to win the first set.
Iga Swiatek got a break for 3-1 in the second set when Jessica Pegula sent a forehand hit towards the right. Iga Swiatek maintained her composure and sealed her victory with an excellent backhand winner after one hour and 29 minutes of play. The Pole fired 30 winners to 28 unfocused errors and broke the serve of Jessica Pegula five times.
In a post-match interview, Iga Swiatek said, "She was playing very low, so I had to be low on my legs to be good. It was the key. I'm pretty happy I played with an excellent dynamic to push her back slightly.
The victory puts Iga Swiatek as the lone possessor of the third-longest winning streak of the century. She will face Daria Kasatkina of Russia in a semi-final match in Paris on June 2.
Daria Kasatkina advances to the semi-finals at the French Open
Daria Kasatkina won against fellow Russian Veronika Kudermetova 6-4 7-6(5) at the French Open on June 1 to advance to her first Grand Slam semi-final.
In a battle of baseline shots, the Russian players traded early breaks, with Daria Kasatkina earning two consecutive breakpoints at 3-3. Daria Kasatkinaa made just 25 unfocused errors compared to 50 by her opponent. Kasatkina got a 5-4 lead with a brilliant crosscourt forehand two games later and won the second 6-4 on her next serve.
The second set started with the players trading breaks again in the first two games. However, Daria Kasatkina broke Veronika Kudermetova to get a 2-1 lead when she struggled with her serve. Kudermetova equalized the set with another break to 4-4 and rushed to a 6-5 lead as Kasatkina faltered.
Veronika Kudermetova had to take a medical break due to a foot injury and fell behind when she returned to Court Philippe Chatrier. Daria Kasatkina got a 6-1 lead and broke Kudermertoova to seal her victory.
After the win, Daria Kasatkina said, "You could see that the match was nervous and tight, especially the tie break. It's a significant win for me. I am happy to be in the semis for the first time. I tried to forget about the games I had lost. It is so mental, but happy that I was able to keep it.
