Novak Djokovic continues to advance at Roland Garros with straight-set victories. The World No. 1 cruised past Diego Schwartzman with an excellent display of drop shots and groundstrokes. He converted six break points and saved seven to set a quarter-final showdown with Spanish great Rafael Nadal.
Diego Schwartzman proved difficult to break down in the first set and showed great resilience. He got the opportunity to break the Serb twice in the third set but failed to make an impact. Soon after, Novak Djokovic broke his Argentine opponent, cruising to a 6-1 win in the first set.
Diego Schwartzman had a great start to the second set on Court Suzanne Lenglen. He increased the aggression on his groundstrokes to lessen the flow of winners from his Serbian opponent and got a quick 3-0 lead. However, Novak Djokovic pulled a reversal and won seven games in a row with a brilliant display of clever drop shots, clean hitting and relentless defence. In the final set, Djokovic got a break in the sixth game and easily cruised to a victory after two hours and 15 minutes of play.
The victory increased the head to head record of Novak Djokovic against Diego Schwartzman to 7-0 and improved his match record at Roland Garros to 85-15.
Novak Djokovic talked about Diego Schwartzman in a post-match interview. He said, "I have a lot of respect for him. He's a good guy on and off the court and he is a claycourt specialist, so it's not easy, especially in slow conditions today with a ball that was not bouncing high. I found the good serves at the right moments.
Novak Djokovic has reached the quarter-finals at Roland Garros for the 13th consecutive time. The 35-year-old Serb will face Rafael Nadal in a quarter-final clash on May 31.
