French Open: Carlos Alcaraz the youngest man to reach French Open last 16 since 2006
Spanish sensation Carlos Alcaraz Garfia defeated Sebastian Korda of America 6-4, 6-4, 6-2 at Stade Roland Garros in the third round of the French Open on May 28
The sixth-seeded Spaniard took revenge on Sebastian Korda for his only clay-court loss of the year at the Monte Carlo Open last month. Carlos Alcaraz Garfia broke Sebastian Korda four times and fired 24 winners to wrap up the match with a victory in two hours and six minutes.
Carlos Alcaraz fired a forehand winner and secured the first break just nine minutes into the game to get a 2-1 lead. The Spaniard held out with ease and pushed Sebastian Korda to the edge. He served and volleyed three times to take a commanding 5-4 lead, showing no signs of distress as he fired powerful groundstrokes with full force.
After the match, Carlos Alcaraz said, "It's amazing to play in such a great atmosphere. I think the people enjoyed the match and I'm glad to play in front of such a good crowd. In the early matches, I'm trying to have fun out there. I love playing tennis and playing on these courts, so I'm enjoying every second."
It seems like a quarter-final battle between World No. 6 Carlos Alcaraz, defending champion Novak Djokovic and Rafael Nadal is not far away, as they are in the same half of the draw. The win against Korda made Carlos Alcaraz the youngest man to reach the last 16 at French Open.
Carlos Alcaraz will face Karen Khachanova of Russia in the fourth round of the French Open on May 29.
Alexander Zverev eases past Brandon Nakashima to the fourth round of Roland Garros
Third seed Alexander Zverev breezed past Brandon Nakashima of America with a 6(2), 6-3, 7-6(5) win in the third round of the French Open in Paris.
Brandon Nakashima put forth a decent effort against Alexander Zverev. However, the 25-year-old German stayed on track and derailed the attempt of his American opponent with a display of raw power. Despite some impressive defensive play by Brandon Nakashima on Court Suzanne Lenglen in the second set, Zverev fired a backhand winner and broke for 3-1.
In World No. 75, Brandon Nakashima broke Zverev and forced a tiebreak in the final set, but the Olympic champion found the best angles to pull a reversal and secure a straight-set victory. The win improved the win-loss record of Alexander Zverev at the French Open to 20-6.
In a post-match interview, Alexander Zverev said, I raised my level a lot today; it was a different match. I prefer this. This is much better for me. I don't lose too much hair. The atmosphere was terrific.
Alexander Zverev will lock horns with Spanish qualifier Bernabe Zapata Miralles in the fourth round of Roland Garros on May 29
