Davis Cup: Canada make impressive comeback to set up Italy semi-final
Canada booked a semifinal clash with Italy after securing a 3-1 victory over Germany in the quarterfinal round of the Davis Cup at the Martin Carpena Arena in Málaga, Spain, on November 25.
Germany started the match on a solid note as Jan-Lennard Struff secured a 6-3 4-6 7-6(2) victory over Denis Shapovalov of Canada after an intense two-hour-long clash to gain a 1-0 lead.
In the second round, World No. 6 Felix Auger-Aliassime defeated Oscar Otte of Germany in straight sets 7-6(1) 6-4 to force the match into a decider.
The victory made Felix Auger-Aliassime the player with the second-most wins on the ATP Tour this year with 58 victories, three behind Stefanos Tsitsipas.
After the victory, Felix Auger-Aliassime said, "I try to give everything I can on the court. It's never easy in Davis Cup, but I was able to play well in the things I was controlling, and I was serving really well. Hopefully, we get the next win so we can keep going."
Vasek Pospisil and Denis Shapovalov locked horns with Kevin Krawietz and Tim Puetz of Germany in the decider. The Canadian duo dropped the opening set 2-6 but soon bounced back to claim the win for Canada with a 2-6, 6-3, 6-3 victory.
Canada will next face Italy in the semifinal clash of the Davis Cup on November 26.
Davis Cup: Australia beat Croatia 2-1 to advance to the final
Alex de Minaur raced past Marin Cilic of Croatia with a straight sets 6-2, 6-2 victory to force the match into a decider after Borna Coric defeated Thanasi Kokkinakis to cause a disappointing setback for Australia.
In the final round, the Australian pairing of Max Purcell and Jordan Thompson clashed with 14-time tour-level title winners Nikola Mektic and Mate Pavic.
The Croatian duo failed to earn even a single break-point as Max Purcell, and Jordan Thompson secured a 6-7(3), 7-5, 6-4 win to seal the victory for Austalia.
After the victory, Australia captain Lleyton Hewitt said, "Obviously we are a very proud Davis Cup nation. I'm just thrilled for these boys. They deserve to go out there and get the opportunity to play in the final of a Davis Cup, and now it's going to happen on Sunday."
Australia will next face the winner of the semifinal clash between Canada and Italy as they aim to win the prestigious Davis Cup trophy for a record 29th time.
