Casper Ruud reigns supreme in Estoril
Casper Ruud defeated Miomir Kecmanovic to win the Millenium Estoril Open final on Sunday.
The Norwegian needed an hour and 49 minutes on the clay courts of the Portuguese town to defeat the Serbian 6-2 7-6(3) and claim his first title of 2023.
Ruud was great under pressure, saving all three break points he faced while converting two of his own on his way to victory. The world number five got two breaks and saw out the opening set in 36 minutes, but Kecmanovic managed to rally and save his best tennis for the second set.
The world number 40 managed to keep Ruud at bay, saving five break points, but failed to convert any of his own as the pair laboured towards a tiebreak.
Ruud wasted no time, winning the first of his three championship points before embracing his friend at the net.
"I feel great... it's my first time in Estoril and first time lucky, I guess," Ruud said during the trophy ceremony.
"To be here with the trophy this Sunday is very special. It's been quite some months since I won my last title, so it's very important.
"It was full every time that I was on the court it was a full stadium so thank you to everyone who is here today and also during the week."
A humble Kecmanovic congratulated Ruud for his exploits.
"You were too good today... good job this week and good luck for the rest of the year," he said.
"Thank you to everybody who came out. It was my first time here. I really enjoyed playing in front of you guys and I really hope I can come back next time."
