ATP Tour news: Dan Evans bows out in Marrakech after three-set semi-final defeat

Roberto Carballes Baena brought an end to Dan Evans' aspirations of securing his second ATP Tour title by defeating him in the semi-finals of the Grand Prix Hassan II.

    Dan Evans. Dan Evans.

Carballes Baena stormed back from losing the opening set to beat the British number two 2-6 6-4 6-2 in two hours and 36 minutes.

Evans' solitary ATP tour title came at the 2021 Murray River Open in Australia, but the world ranked number 30 had raised hopes of a second success with his progress in Morocco this week.

The 32-year-old from Birmingham was also 52 places higher than Carballes Baena in the ATP world rankings.

Both players lost their opening service games and took time to settle.

The decisive moment in the first set came in the sixth game as Evans broke for a 4-2 lead.

Despite being assessed by the physio at 5-2, Evans sewed up the first set in 54 minutes.

The second set went with serve until Carballes Baena broke for a 5-4 lead and quickly levelled the match.

The Spaniard broke again at the start of the final set and grew stronger to set up a final date with Alexandre Muller or Pavel Kotov.
