Novak Djokovic advanced to the quarterfinal of the Astana Open after securing a 6-3, 6-1 victory over Botic van de Zandschulp at the National Tennis Center in Astana, Kazakhstan, on October 6.
The Serbian legend dominated the World's No. 34 Botic van de Zandschulp with his clean strikes to secure a straight-set victory after one hour and 71 minutes of play.
Botic van de Zandschul found some success against Novak Djokovic, but the 35-year-old Serb discovered his rhythm and broke the serve of his Dutch opponent at 4-2 after a 30/30 game. He carried on with his serve and clinched the first game 6-3.
In the second set, Novak Djokovic won five straight games from 1-1 to secure his 30th tour-level victory of the year. The victory extended the winning streak of the Serb to six matches.
Novak Djokovic served five aces, won 80% of the points on the first serve and broke the serve of Botic van de Zandschulp four times from five opportunities. In contrast, the 26-year-old Dutch served two aces, won 57% of the points on the first serve and committed three double faults.
After the victory, Novak Djokovic said, "Botic is a quality tennis player. When he has time, he can hurt you, so I tried to take away that time from him. I am very pleased with the way I played, particularly in the second."
Novak Djokovic will lock horns with Karen Khachanov of Russia for a spot in the semifinal of the Astana Open on October 7. The 26-year-old Russian roared back from a set down to beat the ninth seed Marin Cilic 2-6, 6-3, 6-3 to advance into the quarterfinal.
Daniil Medvedev advances a step closer to a possible duel with Novak Djokovic
Daniil Medvedev secured a comfortable 6-3, 6-2 victory over Emil Ruusuvuori of Finland to move closer to a potential semifinal clash with Novak Djokovic.
The number two seed Daniil Medvedev negated the big-hitting ability of Emil Ruusuvuori of Finland with excellent baseline play to win in straight sets on the indoor hardcourts at the ATP 500 event in Kazakhstan.
After the victory, Daniil Medvedev said, "I am trying to be consistent. That was a little bit of the goal this week. But the further you go, the more just being consistent you will not be enough. Emil is a tough player; he can bring a lot of tough matches to top opponents, from what I feel."
Daniil Medvedev will next face World's No. 21 Roberto Bautista Agut of Spain in the quarterfinal round of the Astana Open on October 7. The 34-year-old Spaniard has a win-loss record of 4-1 against the former World's number one, with three of the four wins coming in straight sets.
