Andy Murray Faces Federico Delbonis at Miami Open
Andy Murray will face World No. 36 Federicio Delbonis in the first round of the Miami Open. During their previous encounter, Murray had lost to Delbonis at Indian Wells in 2016.
The winner of the upcoming match will tackle Daniil Medvedev, who no longer is in the top spot in the ATP rankings after exiting Paribas Open in the early stages. Daniil Medvedev needs to enter the semi-finals of the Miami Open to reclaim the throne from Djokovic ahead of the French Open. Meanwhile, Andy Murray is currently a two-time champion at the ATP Masters 1000 tournament but has not appeared even once since 2016. The former World No. 1 couldn't beat Medvedev in Brisbane in 2019 which marks their last meeting.
So what are Murray's Chances?
Andy Murray is far more experienced than the 31-year-old left-hander who is not in his best form. He lost four of his last five matches, including an unexpected loss against world No 116 Thiago Monteiro. Delbonis is in the 36th position while Andy Murray is currently ranked 85 in the world. The three-time Grand Slam winner has four wins against players ranked higher than Federico Delbonis this year. However, the primary issue behind Andy Murray's turbulent tennis record is his fitness. Regardless of how the Miami Open unfolds for the British player, he will stay back in Florida to train.
Murray to Extend His Stay in the States
Despite being a former French Open finalist, Andy Murray will not participate in the clay-court season to prepare for Wimbledon. For that purpose, he approached Ivan Lendl to be his coach. The Czech former player has been providing remote training sessions with Mark Hilton supervising the fieldwork on Indian Wells and Leon Smith at the Miami Open. Ivan Lendl will fly to Miami in order to host a pre-Wimbledon training camp there. Andy Murray has won three Grand Slam titles and two Olympic gold medals under his regime. So Andy Murray is relying on his returning coach for better performance in the upcoming tournaments.
Murray's Disappointment Over His Indian Wells Defeat
“If I look at a match like today, I had all of the opportunities really in the first set,” Andy Murray remarked after losing to Alexander Bublik in Indian Wells.“I’ve not felt like I’m playing my best in those moments, maybe not making always the right decisions or sometimes holding back a bit too much or sometimes going for a little bit too much. That’s the thing that obviously needs to change. I just didn’t take my opportunities today and I feel that was an opportunity missed."
“I tried to do the right things at times, just was not executing them well, and that’s where, and I’ve said I really need to also spend some time on the practice court to change those things. Obviously winning matches and competing is important but there’s a few things that have been an issue for a period of time and I need a bit of time on the practice court to try and change that," as revealed by Andy Murray. Considering how Miami has favoured the British icon in the years 2009 and 2013, fans want the best out of him.
