Tennis Winston-Salem Open: Jack Draper beats Fabio and Rafael Nadal, Carlos Alcaraz to play in a US open charity
World No. 55 Jack Draper won against Fabio Fognini of Italy 6-2, 4-6, 6-1 in the second round of the Winston-Salem Open at Wake Forest University in North Carolina, United States, on August 24
Jack Draper entered the match looking to maintain the momentum of his breakthrough run from qualifiers to the quarterfinal at the Montreal Open, which pushed him to a career-high ranking of World No. 55.
He directly opened his campaign in the second round of the Winston-Salem Open after receiving a first-round bye.
No. 13 seed Jack Draper and Fabio Fognini exchanged early breaks of serve in the opening set. The 20-year-old Brit upped his return game and grabbed a second break to clinch the first set 6-2.
Fabio Fognini fought back to win the second set and sent the match into a decider. Jack Draper began the third set aggressively and raced to a 5-0 lead while saving five breakpoints in the five-deuce fifth game before clinching the victory.
Jack Draper served six aces, won 72% of the points on the first serve and broke the serve of his Italian opponent six times from ten opportunities.
In contrast, Fabio Fognini served one ace, won 61% of the points on the first serve and broke his serve three times from 13 opportunities.
Jack Draper will lock horns with 2020 US Open champion Dominic Thiem in a pre-quarter clash of the Winston-Salem Open on August 25.
Dominic Thiem advanced to the third round after Grigor Dimitrov was forced to retire despite winning the first set with a bagel when the 28-year-old Austrian upped his game in the second to tire out the Bulgarian.
In a post-match interview, Dominic Thiem said, "The most important thing today is that Grigor gets well very soon again. The match is not the priority; that's never the way I want to win a match, especially against Grigor."
