The 2022 US Open will be the last time for some professional players on tour. This year, we witnessed 17 players on the ATP tour and 19 from the WTA Tour confirming their retirement from the sport
Here is a list of four players who will be seen playing for the last in Flushing Meadows!
Aljaz Bedene
News about former top 50 player Aljaz Bedene's retirement arrived in May 2022. He declared it was his last season after Slovenia's Davis Cup tie.
Bedene started his professional career in 2008 and entered four finals at the ATP 250 level. He became a runner-up in all of them.
The Slovenian has never crossed the third round in Slams or Masters events. He is currently playing in the tennis Bundesliga in Germany and has suffered three defeats.
He has been named on the singles entry list for the 2022 US Open. He plans to be a soccer agent after retiring.
Gilles Simon
Gilles Simon's professional career took off in 2002, and after 20 years on tour, it is now time for him to end his career. The veteran Frenchman has been in the top 10 and won 14 singles tour-level trophies.
He was a runner-up in Masters events in Madrid in 2008 and Shanghai in 2014. He peaked during 2009 Australian Open and the 2015 Wimbledon championships, where he became a quarterfinalist.
However, the Frenchman never crossed the fourth round at Flushing Meadows.
Sania Mirza
Sania Mirza is best known for her record in the doubles category. She was the world number one in doubles and has won six and six mixed doubles Majors.
Sania Mirza is a former top-30 player in singles, and as of now, she is in the top 30 in doubles. She lost the first round of her doubles match at the Australian Open, which was followed by news of her retirement by the end of the season.
She revealed that her body is wearing down, and the recovery process has slowed with age. Moreover, she was risking her three-year-old son's health by travelling on tours. So it was the right time for her to end her career.
The Indian won the 2014 US Open in mixed doubles and the 2015 US Open in the women's doubles category. Sania Mirza and Coco Vandeweghe received a wildcard for the doubles main draw in this year's US Open.
Serena Williams
Serena Williams is arguably the greatest woman to have played tennis, and her upcoming departure has shaken the realm of the sport. She has won 23 singles Majors, 14 doubles and two mixed doubles Slams.
Williams was the top-ranked player for 319 weeks. She started her professional career in 1995 and won 73 tour-level singles titles and 23 doubles titles.
The three-time career Slam winner in singles and two-time career Slam winner in doubles has left a lasting impact on the Olympics, where she won gold once in singles and thrice in doubles.
