The 2022 Queen's Club Championships: Tommy Paul downs Stan Wawrinka and Matteo Berrettini wins against Denis Kudla
Tommy Paul entered his first tour-level quarter-final on the grass on Thursday after beating former world number three Stan Wawrinka 6-1, 6-4
Tommy Paul said that he is now comfortable on grass, and hopes for it to become his preferred surface by 2023. Paul has now levelled his ATP Head-to-Head series against Wawrinka at 1-1 and will next face reigning champion Matteo Berrettini.
He also made it to the last eight at two tournaments in Adelaide and one in Acapulco. On the other hand, it was Stan Wawrinka's eighth appearance at The Queen’s Club, and his personal best there was a run to the semi-finals in 2014. The 37-year-old will play Wimbledon later this month through a wild card.
Matteo Berrettini makes a powerful comeback against Kudla
Matteo Berrettini won it 3-6 7-6(5) 6-4. Berrettini reached the quarterfinal of the Queen's Club event after seeing off a very determined Kudla who has been a good grass player for several years.
The first set slipped away from Berrettini as Kudla had an early break point. The Italian experienced stiff competition especially when the American broke his serve later in the set and won it 6-3 without facing a single break point. He maintained his focus in the second set too but faced a tougher challenge from Berrettini. The Italian took an early break point but failed to convert it. He had a chance at 3-3 and then later, at 6-5 where he led the game 40-15 but the set went to a tiebreak, where he won it 7-5 after a long and hard duel.
The third set leaned in favour of Berrettini who did not lose a single point behind his first serve. However, Kudla pressed on to give his opponent a tough time. Berrettini led a 3-2 lead but Kudla levelled it to 3-3 but later, conceded a break point to make the score 5-4. After that, Berrettini held his serve to close the match 6-4.
