World Cup 2022 T20: From Eoin Morgan's retirement to Jonny Bairstow's injury - What has changed for England?
English cricket has undergone a massive transformation since Joe Root left his red-ball captaincy and Eoin Morgan announced his retirement from international cricket
Change in coach and captaincy is said to bring change in the cricketing era for England. While a change came in captaincy, the remaining transformation came following the injuries among the English players.
In the World Cup squad announced, the primary call that came out as the most significant difference apart from Jos Buttler taking over the reins of captaincy from Eoin Morgan is the dropping of opener Jason Roy.
The choice between Phil Salt and Alex Hales at the opening spot
The main-stay opening duo of Jason Roy and Jos Buttler got broken, and we saw a new pair in Jos Buttler and Jonny Bairstow, giving England a flying start on various occasions.
But with Jonny Bairstow getting ruled out of the World Cup, England gave a call-back to Alex Hales, who gave a decently good performance while opening alongside Phil Salt against Pakistan.
Saeed Ajmal posted, "Man can do Everything, and this time the man is Phil Salt."
Nasser Hussain said, "If Buttler keeps, I can't get Salt in as Hales' record in Australia in the Big Bash is exceptional and he is more experienced than Salt."
So England has two options to choose from who can potentially open with Jos Buttler in the World Cup.
Middle-order option in power-hitter Harry Brooks
The only difference in middle-order from the last World Cup is the absence of Eoin Morgan.
Ben Duckett, who played exceptionally well in the seven-match T20I series against Pakistan, is not a part of the World Cup squad. Thus, the middle-order is expected to be formed with the services of Liam Livingstone, Dawid Malan, Moeen Ali and a possible contender in Harry Brooks, who has made a severe case from county cricket to the international opportunities given to him.
"Harry Brook is just going to be a superstar in all formats, he really is. He's 360 but in a different way. I think, for me, he's absolutely nailed-on for that No five spot for the first game in that World Cup," said Nasser Hussain.
Sam Curran is a perfect all-rounder and has been doing the needed job for England since he made it to the playing XI.
Plenty of options among bowlers to form a perfect bowling unit
Amongst bowlers, Chris Woakes, Chris Jordan, Adil Rashid, and Mark Wood are the best option in the absence of Jofra Archer, who misses out due to injury recovery.
Apart from them, Reece Topley and David Willey have been clinical on all the opportunities that they have got. Reece Topley's performance against India to take six wickets is still a fresh memory. England might want to use him against specific teams on bouncy Australian pitches at the cost of some other bowler.
Nasser Hussain said, "For me, England's four best bowlers are Mark Wood - that's a given with his pace and X factor - Adil Rashid with his variations and ability at the death, Reece Topley with the way he has come on this year, has the left-arm angle and takes wickets up front, and then I'd go Jordan."
The Pakistan tour has given a lot of options and combinations to test for England. They have found a talented bunch of in-form players who can be part of their playing XI for the World Cup.
