T20 World Cup 2022, Australia VS New Zealand: Cricket Australia in upheaval for World Cup - who to take and in which position?

Just one day before the first match of defending Champions Australia, they have many questions and surprises to answer. Injuries have been a real problem this tournament, and the Australian team is one of the worst hits

Injuries have forced the hosts to re-shuffle their squad just a day before their first match of the mega tournament against New Zealand.

Will Cameron Green's wild card entry replace Glenn Maxwell?

When everyone was thinking about Cameron Green in the World Cup squad, an injury to Josh Inglis opened the doors for the former. Cameron Green has now been included in the main 15-member squad, continuing to add glory to his international cricket career.

While Josh Inglish was a capable batter, he was more of a backup wicketkeeper for the team and would not have featured in the match unless Matthew Wade got injured. But now Cameron Green's inclusion has made playing XI selection intense.

Would he replace out-of-form all-rounder Glenn Maxwell?

The 23-year-old has been included in the squad following his impressive outing in the T20I series against India last month. Everyone has seen how Glenn Maxwell has been struggling with his power-hitting capabilities.

Glenn Maxwell has won many games for Australia and is being backed by management completely to regain his form. Although Cameron Green is dangerous with the bat, Glenn Maxwell provides a better option with the ball. Thus, Australia is likely to go with Glenn Maxwell unless the situation calls for a need for an attacking batter like Cameron Green.

When asked about Cameron Green's inclusion in the playing XI against New Zealand, Aaron Finch said, "No, I don't think so. He has just arrived this morning from Perth. He has come in as a cover. I will open the batting, but we don't have a team just yet."

But if Glenn Maxwell fails to perform, Australia might also give this option a good thought.

No backup keeper- Who will wear keeping gloves if Matthew Wade gets injured?

After Josh Inglis was ruled out of the World Cup squad, Australia has eliminated the option of a backup wicketkeeper in case Matthew Wade gets injured.

When asked about it, skipper Aaron Finch said, "Probably, David Warner I would think, he did a little bit of practice yesterday."

He added, "Myself, maybe captaining and keeping, when you haven't done it before, it's a little bit tougher. Maybe Mitchell Starc can bowl a few upfront, take the gloves in the middle and then bowl again in the end. But probably David, that's a risk we are prepared to take at the moment."

Even their head coach Andrew McDonald also pointed out that Aaron Finch, David Warner, and Mitchell Starc can do the keeping role if needed in the tournament.

Who will Aaron Finch play- Steven Smith or Tim David?

For Aaron Finch, it'll be like a decision between Experience and Form.

Steven Smith was seen being benched on a previous occasion, while Tim David was included in the squad. As a water boy, Steve Smith triggered much debate about how Cricket Australia seemed to sideline him.

But even after carrying plenty of experience, Steve Smith has not been able to contribute to the team's full potential.

And amidst all the speculation of whether he will play the first world cup match against New Zealand or not, Australia's chairman of selectors, George Bailey, gave a strong response. He said, "I think all the members of our 15 have a role to play but I don't think that will be starting in the XI for Steve. I think that should we need a role from him at some stage, then absolutely."

It shows that Steve Smith's likely absence from the starting side will pave the way for Tim David to fill the role under Aaron Finch.
