T20 World Cup 2022: Underperforming captains and disappointing teams
While captains are still the face of their team, many groups still get a suit. In contrast, others board in standard rooms, the importance of a captain is being questioned more frequently than it used to be, mainly if the captain in question is not playing cricket to their full potential
At the professional level, the captain's job is less defined. Some teams give them complete control—selectors take their advice when choosing the XV and XI, and they decide how the game will be played—while others limit them to on-field decisions.
At the elite level of the modern game, though, plans on the field are primarily pre-decided; the longer the format, the more the team's fate depends on the fitness and depth of its bowling attack; players have become more and more responsible for themselves. Coaches and support staff play a more significant role in running T20s.
In cricket, the performance of the captain has an impact on the performance of the playing XI; thus, we spotlight on Underperforming Captains of the T20 World Cup 2022:
1. Babar Azam: Pakistan captain Babar Azam was slammed on social media after failing to make an impression in another T20 World Cup 2022 match for his team on Thursday (October 27). Babar Azam was caught LBW against India on October 23 for a duck, followed by another poor performance of four runs against Zimbabwe in Pakistan's second World Cup match. 'Aur Karo Virat Kohli se compare,' Babar Azam was trolled on social media after a poor performance in T20 World Cup 2022. Wasim Akram said, " Babar Azam won't sacrifice his spot for the team. he has to learn the difference between the captain and the leader."
2. Temba Bavuma: Temba Bavuma is under constant scanner during this T20 World Cup, and it must be wearing on him. South Africa's white-ball skipper Temba Bavuma's lean patch with the bat continued on Thursday, October 27, when he was out cheaply during the team's T20 World Cup 2022 encounter against Bangladesh. Taskin Ahmed dismissed the right-handed batter for two runs off six deliveries in the first over. Temba Bavuma in the last seven innings in T20I: 8(10), 8*(11), 0(4), 0(7), 3(8), 2*(2) & 2(6). He is again a victim of social media trolling.
3. Kane Williamson: The Kiwi captain has again disappointed fans with his scoring rate. Kane Williamson faced 23 deliveries and scored 23 runs against Australia, leaving supporters scratching their heads. Fans on social media tweeted," Kane Williamson has reduced New Zealand's total from 230 to 190". It's not the first time Kane Williamson has become the brunt of Twitter jokes for his slow performance in a T20 encounter.
4. Nicholas Pooran: West Indies captain Pooran has struggled with the bat in the ongoing campaign. West Indies skipper Nicholas Pooran could not do anything exceptional with the bat. West Indies fans also questioned his leadership qualities and blamed him for the team's disappointing performance in the competition.
