T20 World Cup 2022: Two English players to watch out for as the T20 World Cup progresses
After a surprising loss to a brilliant Ireland, England bounced back and won against the World Cup favorites New Zealand
All the big-name teams are still on guard against the associates or lesser-fancied teams as the rains and brilliance display on the day can turn the game around in a few overs.
England came into the T20 World Cup 2022 as one of the favourites to go all the way, and their win against New Zealand in their penultimate Super 12 game means they are just one win away from sealing their spot in the semi-finals.
One of the reasons they are such a fancied side is due to the variety of talent they have managed to include in the team. Specialist T20 players like Moeen Ali and Rashid Ali give it variety and flexibility in its batting and bowling department.
However, there are some players England will rely on more than others going forward. Here are two players who will be critical to England's chances in the semi-finals – assuming they make it to the final four.
Jos Buttler – England's new white-ball captain, didn't have the best of starts to the tournament. However, in his half-century against New Zealand – he scored 73 off 47 balls – which shows that, at his best, he remains one of their best batsmen.
It's not just his batting that is important to the side. His work behind the stumps is exemplary, whether it be his wicket-keeping skills or his ability to direct his bowlers and make the needed changes to strategy and field placement.
England has a power-packed and intense batting line-up, but they will need Buttler to be at his best if they are to go the distance in this World Cup.
One of the reasons England was criticised in the last World cup over death bowling, and England seems to have found a specialist bowler in Sam Curran.
Sam Curran – The left-arm pace bowling all-rounder has recently been a critical part of the English side. His ability to bowl in power play and the death makes him a sure-shot starter when he's fit and available. After battling injuries, he is back and is giving them an edge with his bowling and fielding.
But it isn't just with the ball that he will weave his magic. He can hit a few long balls when coming in to bat lower down the order and is a valuable addition to ensure the batting line-up has depth. That's the importance of the younger Sam Curran in the current England team.
