T20 World Cup 2022: Sri Lanka thrash Afghanistan by six wickets
Dhananjaya de Silva's unbeaten knock of 66 and a three-wicket haul by Wanindu Hasaranga, powered Sri Lanka to victory by six wickets in their T20 World Cup group one match at the Gabba in Brisbane on Tuesday
This was a crucial win for Sri Lanka, as it put them in a good position to advance to the next round of the tournament.
Winning the toss, Mohammed Nabi chose to bat first. Afghanistan had a good start in the powerplay (42/0), but Sri Lanka came back into the contest. Lahiru Kumara (2/30) and Wanindu Hasaranga (3/13) were the best bowlers as Afghanistan finished at 144/8 in 20 overs.
Mujeeb Ur Rehman got Afghanistan off to a great start by dismissing Pathum Nissanka for 10. Later, Rashid Khan also got the wicket of Kusal Mendis. But de Silva held the innings together as Sri Lanka claimed the victory with nine balls to spare.
Player of the Match
Wanindu Hasaranga: "We lost last two games against Australia and New Zealand. We had to play our best game. I am really happy. Last game also I thought Zampa bowled well. I tried to vary my pace here. Perth was very good for the batters. I had gone for a few runs against Australia. But I knew I will bounce back. I had the support of big boundaries here."
