T20 World Cup 2022: "My best innings," Virat Kohli says of MCG epic
Virat Kohli described his fantastic match-winning knock against Pakistan as his personal best in the format, while others believed it was the greatest ever performed by an Indian
In front of 90,293 spectators at the MCG on Sunday night, the superstar batter rose to the monumental occasion, leading India to an incredible four-wicket victory over Pakistan in their maiden T20 World Cup encounter.
For Kohli, it was even better than his memorable 82-run innings against the Australians in the 2016 T20 World Cup in Mohali.
"Till today I have always said Mohali was my best innings, against Australia: I got 82 off (51). Today I got 82 off 53. So they are exactly the same innings, but I think today I will count this one higher because of the magnitude of the game and what the situation was," Virat Kohli told Star Sports after the match.
On Sunday, India was doomed to begin this year's tournament with a humiliating defeat to their main rivals, falling to 4-31 in response to Pakistan's 8-159.
Kohli's experience proved essential as he paired up with Hardik Pandya (40 off 37) for a rescue operation, with the pair putting on a 113-run fourth-wicket partnership.
Ravi Ashwin scored the winning run off the last ball while Kohli was still there, undefeated on 82 from 53 balls, sending the Indian fans into a frenzy.
India will play the Netherlands at the SCG on Thursday in their bid for their first T20 World Cup victory since 2007, while Pakistan will play Zimbabwe later that evening in Perth.
