T20 World Cup 2022: Matthew Wade is the second Australian to contract the Covid-19 virus, following Adam Zampa
Matthew Wade has become the second member of the Australian team to contract COVID-19 during their World Cup campaign
Wade is thought to be experiencing relatively slight symptoms and barring a worsening of his health, is still anticipated to play in Friday's crucial encounter against England at the MCG.
An Australian team official confirmed the 34-year-old, who was the only wicketkeeper in the 15-man squad after Josh Inglis suffered a hand injury last week and was replaced by Cameron Green, returned a positive test on Wednesday evening.
On Thursday afternoon, Glenn Maxwell strapped on wicketkeeping gloves and completed drills with assistant coach Andre Borovec, a former first-grade gloveman, at Australia's training session at the Junction Oval indoor nets.
However, the event organizers remain confident that Wade will be able to compete. A more significant concern is preventing the virus from spreading after Adam Zampa missed Tuesday's win over Sri Lanka due to COVID-19.
However, Wade will not be permitted to use the team restroom before or during the game, and he must travel to the field separately.
Meanwhile, Zampa has returned several negative tests recently and was bowling in the nets to spin coach Dan Vettori at the Junction on Thursday, a clear indication that he will be fit to return to Australia's XI.
