T20 World Cup 2022: Jos Buttler and Alex Hales set a new batting record
Jos Buttler and Alex Hales made a chase of 169 looks like a walk in the park to beat India in the semi-finals of the ICC Men's T20 World Cup 2022 on Thursday
Jos Buttler finished with 80* off 49 balls, and Alex Hales with 86* off 47. And the combined 170/0 saw records tumbling.
The partnership of the two Englishmen surpassed the previous highest opening score in a men's T20 World Cup, 152 between Mohammad Rizwan and Babar Azam, also against India, in 2021.
And the winning runs took the English duo to an even more extensive record. Their combined 170 is now the highest partnership for a wicket in an ICC Men's T20 World Cup.
The record of 166 between Mahela Jayawardena and Kumar Sangakkara of Sri Lanka had stood for 12 years before Quinton de Kock, and Rilee Rossouw of South Africa beat it by two runs in this tournament against Bangladesh.
But Quinton De Kock and Rilee Rossouw's stay at the top lasted only two weeks.
The English captain Jos Buttler says it was the strength of England's batting line-up, as well as the aggressive approach of his opening partner, that gave him so much confidence in the middle.
