T20 World Cup 2022: Injuries and T20- How serious was Bumrah's injury that prevented him from throwing five overs in five matches?
Rohit Sharma: "We need to be careful as we need to make sure Bumrah's career is not destroyed"
India is heading into the T20 World Cup without their highly rated spearhead Jasprit Bumrah with the first fixture being on October 23. Pacer Jasprit Bumrah was ruled out of the mega tournament after BCCI confirmed that he would not travel with the team to Australia due to his back injury.
Jasprit Bumrah missed the Asia Cup in September due to his back issues and made a comeback in a home series against Australia and South Africa. However, the injury recurrence in a match against South Africa was a massive blow to the bowler and team.
Rohit Sharma said, "Injury is part and parcel of the sport. You can't be too disappointed. You have to think about what you can do. We gave chances to other players, and they performed well. It's important to give chances to all those players. You can't do much more about it taking plenty of time, team India announced experienced pacer Mohammed Shami as his replacement for the important tournament."
Conservative approach by India on Jasprit Bumrah's Injury
Skipper Rohit Sharma on October 15 further explained that the team management didn't want to rush around Jasprit Bumrah's recovery for the World Cup.
Rohit Sharma said, "Bumrah is a quality player, he has been playing very well over the years. Unfortunately, injuries happen. But you can't do anything about it. We spoke to a lot of specialists about his Injury but we didn't get a positive response. World Cup. Yes, it's very important, but his career, for us, is more important. He is just 28 years old and he has a lot of cricket left in him."
He said management showed its best efforts to prepare him, but recovery can't be forced, keeping an event in mind. Seam bowlers are more prone to injuries than other bowlers, and making a hap-hazard decision can adversely affect their careers.
One of the prime examples can be taken from English pacer Jofra Archer's injuries. Suppose a bowler has not recovered from Injury taking a natural course of time. In that case, a forced and hurried comeback can further aggravate the problem, keeping the bowler out of action from the game more than ever if it was needed in the first space.
"So, we can't take such risks. All the specialists we spoke to, also suggested the same. There is a lot of cricket left to be played. He will play a lot more matches and win a lot more matches for India in the future. There is no doubt about it. But his absence is a blow for us," he added.
Mohammed Shami is boosting the confidence in India's bowling
Speaking about his replacement, Mohammed Shami, the skipper, said, "He got Covid and was in the arm. He was then called to NCA and worked very hard and is now in Brisbane. He is working hard. Shami is very positive and he is recovering well. He has bowled 4 -5 sessions quite well."
Showing positive intent towards the big tournament despite many setbacks in the form of injuries to their key players, team India seems confident with their players.
He said, "I don't believe in last-minute decisions. It is important to tell the players in advance that they are playing."
So India looks to be all set with their playing XI for their first match against arch-rivals Pakistan on October 23.
