T20 World Cup 2022: India VS England- Virat Kohli's 'home ground' Adelaide could help India reach the final
After Virat Kohli scored a half-century against Bangladesh that would eventually help India win their third match of the T20 World Cup, he kept up his record of achieving big at the Adelaide Oval
Indeed, his record in Adelaide is staggering – in 10 matches across formats, he's scored 907 runs, including five centuries and three half-centuries.
His average across formats is a mammoth 75.58, and his T20I average at the ground cannot be calculated – because in the two matches he's played there in cricket's shortest format, he's never been dismissed.
Little wonder, then, that he said after the match that playing in the city makes him feel at home.
"I love playing at this ground. This place makes me feel at home. When I come to Adelaide, I am meant to enjoy myself and keep batting," Kohli said when collecting his man-of-the-match trophy after the match against Bangladesh.
"That knock at MCG (vs Pakistan) was meant to be, but when I come here, it's like I'm meant to come to Adelaide and enjoy my batting."
As fate would have it, Virat Kohli and India would be back at the Oval – for their semi-final encounter against England. And confidence would be running high for India.
As Kohli himself admitted, he enjoys batting on the ground. And not just him, India have mostly fond memories of playing at the ground too – that one 36 all out notwithstanding.
Therefore, India would be relatively confident going into the tie because muscle memory in the sport when it comes to playing at specific venues cannot be ignored as a factor.
There's also the fact that Adelaide is a ground that offers some degree of assistance to the bowlers – pacers find some movement and bounce early on, whereas spinners find some purchase and grip as the ball grows older.
Plus, India have won the one match they played at the Adelaide Oval during this tournament – the previous clash against Bangladesh.
There's also the fact that the stadium is expected to be packed to the rafters with Indian supporters. This has been true throughout the tournament but could reach a fever pitch due to India making the semis.
Australia has many people of Indian origin residing in the nation, but the number of people who have traveled from India to support the team is also massive.
In almost every game India have played in the tournament up until this point, many fans have vociferously backed them.
The players have even been greeted by many fan groups when they are traveling, with one particular fan group, Fans India, making the news as they waited at the Adelaide airport to serenade the players upon their arrival.
Such a massive support base will only help the Indians further – it might not be a home World Cup in the traditional sense, but they have a very partisan crowd backing them.
