T20 World Cup 2022: Australia was eliminated by Lorcan Tucker and Rashid Khan
In the end, perhaps even Australia knew deep down that they were far too reliant on other results to be a legitimate contender for a semi-final spot in the T20 World Cup 2022
England’s win over Sri Lanka confirmed their presence in the final four and the elimination of their Ashes rivals.
It is a result that will undoubtedly sting, especially since not only were the Aussies defending champions but also the hosts.
However, such is the nature of the game – and Australia will arguably rue not one, not two, but three big moments during the group stages that cost them their semi-final slot.
The first was, of course, the hammering they took at the hands of New Zealand to start the World Cup. Not only did it mean they were up against it from the get-go, but it also said they were always trying to play catch-up in terms of their net run rate.
That said, there were two golden chances of them getting close to the required net run rate to seal their semis spot.
The first came against Ireland. Batting first, Australia scored a mammoth 179-5 in their 20 overs. And they had Ireland on the ropes when they were 25-5 in 3.6 overs.
<blockquote class="twitter-tweet"><p lang="en" dir="ltr">Aust eliminated by .573 on net run rate, essentially through the combined contributions of Lorcan Tucker and Rashid Khan <a href="https://twitter.com/hashtag/T20WorldCup?src=hash&ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw">#T20WorldCup</a></p>— Daniel Brettig 🏏 (@danbrettig) <a href="https://twitter.com/danbrettig/status/1588855351667228673?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw">November 5, 2022</a></blockquote> <script async src="https://platform.twitter.com/widgets.js" charset="utf-8"></script>
At that point, an NRR-changing win looked very much on the cards. However, an excellent knock of 71* from Lorcan Tucker ensured that Ireland took the game deep.
They didn’t win the game, having been dismissed for 137 in the 19th over. But the margin of victory – 42 runs – did Australia no favors.
Rashid khan’s knock of 48 not out from 23 balls restricted Australia to a low Net Run Rate.
Australia won by just 4 runs margin against Afghanistan which was again a reason for Australia's elimination.
