T20 World Cup 2022: Australians unconcerned by Glenn Maxwell's record leanness
Glenn Maxwell's uncommon extended run of single-figure scores is not causing concern in the Australia camp on the eve of the T20 World Cup
Glenn Maxwell, the world's best all-rounder, has been encouraged to keep his aggressive instincts despite having a string of low scores in his last six T20 internationals.
Maxwell, Australia's third most capped T20 player, is a proven matchwinner with bat and ball, according to fast bowler Josh Hazlewood.
The 33-year-career old's for Australia in the shortest format has been so consistent that his current run drought is the longest he's gone without reaching 10 in 93 T20 internationals.
He's only taken three wickets this year but has an impressive economy rate of 7.35. He'll be an essential component of Australia's attack during the World Cup, providing the balance of the fifth bowler's overs alongside fellow all-rounders Marcus Stoinis and Mitchell Marsh.
The additions of Stoinis, Tim David, and Matthew Wade to the middle order, together with Marsh in an aggressive no. three's role may allow Maxwell to play other types of innings during the World Cup than the spectacular stroke-making we've come to expect.
However, Hazlewood warned Maxwell against abandoning his innate instincts, which had been so successful during his 10-year international career.
After the return of left-arm spinner Ashton Agar to full fitness, Australia will be able to field the full 15-man World Cup team for its final two matches before the event begins (against England again in Canberra on Friday and India in Brisbane on Monday).
Marsh is yet to bowl in a match as he recovers from an ankle injury, but he bowled for about 15 minutes off his entire run on the outfield during the warm-up before Friday night's second Dettol T20I stated before the game that he hopes to bowl against India.
