T20 World Cup 2022: What is Australia's World Cup squad?
Aaron Finch led Australia and announced their 15-member squad for the World Cup as they will be competing to defend their title this year in their backyard. Not much has changed in their team since the last winning stint
The reigning world champions will look to be the first-ever side to lift successive T20 World Cup titles. Aaron Finch, David Warner, Steven Smith, and Matthew Wade form a strong batting line-up. Adding youngsters like Josh Inglis and Tim David adds quality support to the middle order.
All-rounders like Glenn Maxwell and Marcus Stoinis will be an asset to add advantage. The pace attack headed by Mitchell Starc, Pat Cummins, Josh Hazlewood, and Kane Richardson, along with the spin department having the best duo of Adam Zampa and Ashton Agar, makes their bowling attack deadly on bouncy home pitches.
Here we will look at the key players for Australia in the squad.
- Matthew Wade
The left-handed batter smashed three sixes in the 19th over against Shaheen Shah Afridi a year ago to seal the memorable win against Pakistan in the World Cup semi-final. In 69 T20Is, he has 993 runs and scored at a strike rate of 133.10. His innings were formed of 79 boundaries and 38 sixes, showing the quality of power-hitter he is.
Michael Bevan known as the supreme 'finisher', finds Matthew Wade perfect as the finisher for Australia. He said, "Hopefully, this will be the role that the Australian selectors see him in -- there are really good signs about Matthew Wade and the Australian batting line-up with him in that position."
His role and contribution as a wicketkeeper remain integral to the team in this World Cup.
- David Warner
The openers' extraordinary batting feats in all three formats are crucial to team Australia. He led his team to their maiden T20I World Cup from the front and became the Man of the Tournament.
Playing with a strike rate of 147 in seven 2021 T20I World Cup games, he scored 289 runs and became the highest run scorer for Australia in T20I World Cup.
This year David Warner has continued his sublime form. He has played 6 T20I this year and has scored 292 runs which is already more than what he scored in the last World Cup.
The Man for the big tournaments will be difficult for any opponent, and he probably won't stop from creating another World Cup record.
- Mitchell Starc
The very face of the Australian aggressive pace attack, Mitchell Starc, loves bouncy Australian pitches. The left-arm seamer can swing the ball in both the direction in the powerplay and bowl deadly toe-crushing yorkers' in death, making him the most lethal bowler of the T20 World Cup 2022.
This year he has played only five T20I but has taken good nine wickets with an economy of 7.85. During the last World Cup, Australia won; he led the pace attack taking nine wickets in seven games.
Mitchell Starc kept himself a little away from T20I Cricket to keep himself fit for the mega tournament, but now he is all set and ready for the World Cup.
