Pro Kabaddi League: Gujarat Giants beat Patna Pirates 40-34, dashing their hopes for a spot in the playoffs
Gujarat Giants put a damper on Patna Pirates' playoff chances in Pro Kabaddi League (PKL) Season nine with a brilliant 40-34 win at Gachibowli Indoor Stadium on Friday
Mahendra Rajput (12 points), Sonu (5 points), and Parteek Dahiya (5 points) were the stars for Gujarat Giants as they wrapped up an important win.
Despite faint hopes of making the playoffs, the two teams set a high tempo and exchanged points constantly in the early exchanges.
By the end of the first 10 minutes, every Gujarat Giants player on the mat had scored a point, a measure of the high-energy contest the match was shaping up.
Facing an all-out, the Gujarat Giants held off the Patna Pirates' attackers several times before finally capitalising and turning the match on its head.
In a Super raid, Mahendra Rajput put Patna Pirates in trouble by dismissing C. Sajin, Mohammadreza Chiyaneh, Monu, and Sachin.
Although Patna Pirates fought back briefly, led by a super tackle by Neeraj Kumar on Parteek Dahiya, Gujarat Giants soon managed the first all-out of the game.
They took an 18-16 lead with five minutes to go in the first half. Rohit Gulia of Patna Pirates scored ten points in the first half, but Rajput's attacks kept catching Patna Pirates cold. Gujarat Giants went into the break with a 23-20 lead.
After the break, Gujarat Giants picked up where they left off: Dahiya and Dong Geon kept them in the lead. Facing another all-out, Patna Pirates managed a super tackle to stay within reach.
Rajput scored 10 points of his own just before the half-time break. The game remained close, however, with neither team able to pull away and the lead never growing beyond two points. The teams exchanged do-or-die attacks, with Sachin and Sonu finding success on the attack.
However, in the game's final moments, Gujarat Giants took the lead and even inflicted a second all-out on Patna Pirates, giving them a 39-31 lead and all but lost. The Gujarat Giants eventually prevailed and claimed a valuable victory.
