The sport is usually played in the standard cycle and the circle cycle. The Indian men's team has won three Standard style titles and six championships in Circle style. The first season of the kabaddi world cup in standard cycle took place in Mumbai in 2004. The International Kabaddi Federation (IKF) organised it, and India beat Iran 55-27 in the final to win the inaugural title.

The format required five teams to separate into two pools, with the top two teams from each group advancing to the semi-finals. India has clinched all the three Kabaddi World Cup titles in Standard style in 2004, 2007 and 2016. They have defeated Iran in the finals of all the editions, which took place in Mumbai, Panvel, and Ahmedabad, respectively. On the other hand, the circle style kabaddi world cup is an international kabaddi competition run by the Government of Punjab in India. It came into existence in 2010, and ever since, it has taken place every year except in 2015 due to the Guru Granth Sahib desecration controversy. India also showed their dominance by winning six of the seven circle style Kabaddi World Cups.

The 2020 edition went to Pakistan as the tough contenders beat their arch-rivals and five-time Kabaddi Champions India. Pakistan made a comeback in the second half to secure a 43-41 win over the defending champions in the finals of the 2020 edition. India had played the tournament even though the authorities at home resolved to investigate why a team participated despite a ban on sporting ties. Circle style tournaments were held in 2010, 2011, 2012, 2013, 2014 and 2020, while five out of six tournaments were won by India. Now, Pakistan is slated to host the Kabaddi World Cup 2024.

    New Rules in Pro Kabaddi

The new rules of Pro Kabaddi allow the team to deliver a "Super Tackle" an extra two points. The move requires three defenders or less to keep a raider down in any raid. The "Do-Or-Die Raid" is another new rule which accelerates scoring rates.
