Wimbledon News: Coco Gauff faces shock third-round exit, loses to Amanda Anisimova

No. 20 seed Amanda Anisimova bounced back from a set down to defeat teenage sensation Coco Gauff in her maiden centre-court match. No. 11 seed Coco Gauff started aggressively and raced to a quick 3-0 lead before the 20-year-old American clinched four games in a row to make it 3-4. A break led both players until the opener was sent into a tiebreak. Coco Gauff won the last six points to clinch the first set from 4-1 down.

Amanda Anisimova returned to the second set with a mission as she broke the serve of Coco Gauff three times in the second set and twice in the third set. Amanda Anisimova discovered that Gauff's forehand is her weakness and used a strategy to take advantage of that whenever possible to dominate the last two sets 6-2, 6-1.

It was the second meeting between the upcoming American stars, and the victory of Amanda Anisimova tied the win/loss record to 1-1.

After winning, Amanda Anisimova said, "It's my first time playing on Centre Court. It's the most special day, I think, of my career. It's just a huge privilege to play on this court, playing Coco. She's a fantastic player and just got to the finals of a Grand Slam. Before the match, I was trying to prepare myself to soak at this moment, whether I win or lose. Winning today is just so special.

Amanda Anisimova will next face Harmony Tan of France for a quarterfinal spot on July 3.

Simona Halep makes Wimbledon Round of 16

No. 16 seed Simona Halep cruised past Magdalena Frech of Poland 6-4, 6-1 on Court 2 to reach the fourth round at Wimbledon.

2019 champion Simona Halep dominated the game against her Polish opponent as she fired 24 winners and converted six of ten break points she faced to just five winners by Magdalena Frech. The victory improved the win-loss record of the Romanian star at Wimbledon to 27-8. 

Former World No. 1 Simona Halep took a quick 4-0 lead in the opening set. She served for the set at 5-2 but faltered and committed a double fault, allowing Magdalena Frech to tighten the first set. The 30-year-old Romanian served out the next game for love to clinch the first set. She built on the momentum in the second set and easily sealed a 6 -1 victory with a backhand winner on her third breakpoint.

After the victory, Simona Halep said, "It was not an easy match back in Australia. She's a good opponent. She's a good player. It is never easy to play with her. She's changing rhythm. She's doing well. It was a good match.
