Wimbledon News 2022: Sania Mirza and Mate Pavic through to mixed-doubles semifinals
Indian tennis star Sania Mirza and Mate Pavic of Croatia advanced to the semifinals of the mixed doubles event at Wimbledon after beating John Peers of Australia and Gabriela Dabrowski of Canada 6-4, 3-6, 7-5 on July 4
The Indian-Croatian duo fired won 75% of the points on the first serve, fired eight aces, converted on two of three breakpoint opportunities and committed just one doubled fault compared to four double faults and 68% of the points on the first serve by John Peers and Gabriela Dabrowski to seal their victory after one hour and 43 minutes long battle on court 3.
It is the first time Sania Mirza has advanced to the mixed doubles semifinals at Wimbledon for the first time after reaching the quarterfinals in 2011, 2013 and 2015. She has already won the mixed doubles title at Roland Garros, Australian Open and US Open. A mixed doubles title at Wimbledon is the only Grand Slam mixed double trophy she is missing.
Sania Mirza and Mate Pavic duo will lock horns with the seventh-seeded pairing of Robert Farah and Jelena Ostapenko or second seeds Neil Skupsi and Desirae Krawczyk.
In the other quarterfinal match, American duo Coco Gauff and Jack Sock won against Alizé Cornet and Édouard Roger-Vasselin of France 6-3, 6-4 to book a semifinal spot at Wimbledon.
'Will miss you,' says Wimbledon after Sania Mirza's retirement announcement
One of the few top tennis players in India will retire from Wimbledon after the ongoing season. In a recent tweet, Sania Mirza said, "It has been an honour to represent India in Wimbledon. The official Twitter handle of Wimbledon responded to her message saying, "It has been an honour having you here, Sania. We will miss you #Wimbledon.
Sania Mirza announced her plans to retire from tennis at the Australian Open earlier this year. She said that her body is wearing down, leading to longer recovery times as she gets older and that her three-year-old child is at risk because of how much time he spends travelling with Mirza for her tournaments.
Sania Mirza said," The energy is not the same anymore. There are more days than there used to be when I don't feel like doing that. I've always said I will play until I enjoy that grind, the process I'm not sure I'm enjoying as much anymore
