US Open: WTA rankings update Iga Swiatek maintains World no.1
This year’s US Open has caused significant turbulence in the female WTA rankings, with last year’s stars rolling down the ranking list and new stars making the top 10
First and foremost, it is crucial to note that with her third Grand Slam title and second Grand Slam title of the year, Iga Swiatek has maintained her world no. 1 position after defeating World no. 2, Ons Jabeur.
Though Jabeur is in the second position, the points difference between the two is vast. While Swiatek maintains the top position with 10,365 points, Jabeur is below her with 5,090 points.
In third and fourth positions are Anett Kontaveit and Paula Badosa, who have each rolled down one place after exiting the US Open at an early stage.
Meanwhile, Jessica Pegula reached the quarterfinals and secured a top 5 position by moving up three spots to the fifth. Similarly, after getting her maiden quarterfinal, Coco Gauff has also placed in the top 10 by moving four spots up to the 8th position.
Aryna Sabalenka also showed an incredible performance this season by reaching two semi-finals simultaneously and making it to the 7th position. Meanwhile, Maria Sakkari tumbled down three spots and is now holding the 6th position in the WTA rankings.
Simona Halep holds the 9th position after falling down a few spots. Her shocking first-round loss in the US Open led her to lose a couple of sites to come down to the 9th position. In the 10th position, Caroline Garcia jumped up a couple of spots to restore her place in the top 10.
Garcia reached the semi-finals in New York, and her incredible performance earned her a place in the top 10 in the world.
While this accounts for the women holding the top 10 ranks worldwide, some fan-favourite players have fallen massively after a shocking early exit from the tournament.
Emma Raducanu, last year’s champion in the US Open women’s singles, lost in the first round, making a shocking exit from the tournament. She fell by 72 spots and now holds 83rd in the WTA rankings.
The runners-up of the US Open 2021, Leylah Fernandez, also suffered a surprising second-round defeat leading her to lose 26 spots falling to the 40th position.
