US Open News: Will Daniil Medvedev play? Rules for Russian players at the final Grand Slam of the year
Daniil Medvedev is ready to defend his US Open title at the upcoming tournament. It will mark the Grand Slam's 142nd edition, starting on August 29
The world number one skipped his last Major at Wimbledon as a direct consequence of the ban imposed by the All England Club on Russian and Belarusian players.
Last year, Medvedev's victory at the Flushing Meadows deprived Novak Djokovic of a Calendar Slam. Medvedev then became a finalist at Melbourne and survived two weeks in Paris.
Unfortunately, his consistent form ended when his injuries coaxed him into missing Wimbledon. The Wimbledon officials released a statement that declared the ban of players from Russia and Belarus.
Due to the military unrest in Ukraine, the higher-ups were wary of allowing the Russian regime the chance to derive any benefit from the involvement of Russian or Belarusian players in The Championships.
So they had to impose the ban, as mentioned in the statement. Although it elicited varied responses from different tennis personalities, Medvedev chose to keep his lips sealed.
Medvedev wants to focus on US Open
Like the remaining Russian and Belarusian players, Medvedev wants to move on from the past and leave a deep run in New York. As Wimbledon's decision to ban players from the two nations is considered an isolated event, the squad will return to start their respective US Open campaigns.
Among those denied in London, we will witness Andrey Rublev, Olympic silver winner Karen Khachakov and Aslan Karatsev try their luck in the last Major of the calendar year.
Other than the stars mentioned above, we will witness Daria Kasatkina, Veronika Kudermetova, Ludmilla Samsonova, Ekaterina Alexandrova, three-time former finalist Victoria Azarenka, top-10 player Aryna Sabalenka and Aliaksandra Sasnovich.
What are Daniil Medvedev's chances in the US Open 2022?
Daniil Medvedev will experience a tough challenge in the upcoming Grand Slam as he will look to defend his crown from 12 months ago. Although Novak Djokovic's participation in the tournament is not confirmed due to the incoherent Covid vaccine rules in the US, Rafael Nadal's presence in the draw will pose problems for Medvedev.
Besides Nadal, a group of talented young players at the helm represent Carlos Alcaraz and Jannik Sinner. Furthermore, other in-form players like Nick Kyrgios and Taylor Fritz would make things equally tricky for the top player.
Medvedev has ruled over hard courts over the last few months, where he was seen taking complete control. Now that he has skipped Wimbledon, the urge to succeed must have only increased.
