Tennis News: Top seed Danielle Collins knocked out of Ladies Open Lausanne

Both players started the opening set equally matched and exchanged point for point until Danielle Collins pushed through in the tie-break to win the tightly contested first selected 6-7 (7-5). Simona Walter took control of the game in the second set to send the match into a decider.

Danielle Collins regained the momentum in the third set and raced to a 3-6 lead. However, Simona Walter displayed excellent shotmaking to save three match points to send the match into a tie-break. 

Simona Walter then won five back-to-back points to secure her victory after three hours and one minute of play. The 21-year-old Swiss saved 14 of 19 break points she faced compared to 11 of 17 break points held by her American opponent to bounce back from a set down to secure a second-round spot.

Simona Walter will clash with Cristina Bucșa of Spain in the second round of the ATP 250 event on July 13.

Fifth seed Nuria Parrizas Diaz of Spain and eighth seed Varvara Gracheva of Russia also faced early exits in the opening round of the competition. Nuria Parrizas Diaz fell 6-2, 6-2 to Petra Martic of Croatia in straight sets, while Eva Lys of Germany defeated Varvara Gracheva 7-5, 6-4 to book a second-round clash with compatriot Jule Niemeier.

Caroline Garcia also advanced to the second round after winning 6-3, 6-3 against Jasmine Paolini of Italy.

World No. 108 Kamilla Rakhimova of Russia won against Elena-Gabriela Ruse 6-4, 5-7, 6-3 at Europe Tennis Center in Budapest, Hungary. She fired 23 winners and converted seven of 15 break point opportunities to ensure her victory.

Olympic medallist Laura Pigossi advanced to the second round of the competition after beating Rebecca Peterson of Sweden 7-5, 6-3. She will lock horns with Yulia Putintseva in a second-round faceoff on July 14.
