Tennis News: Stefanos Tsitsipas beats John Isner to set up a clash with Daniil Medvedev
Stefanos Tsitsipas outlasted John Isner 7-6 5-7 6-3 and reached his third consecutive semi-final at the Cincinnati Masters. Now he will meet world number one, Daniil Medvedev
The Greek curbed the American's power hits with heavy topspin and converted a breakpoint in the third set to pull through after two hours and 22 minutes in Cincinnati.
Tsitsipas had satisfying outings at ATP Masters 1000 events this season. He defended his title in Monte Carlo and then entered the semi-finals in Madrid, besides being a finalist in Rome.
The opening set was a competitive affair as neither of them loosened their hold over the match. As Tsitsipas led 4/3, rain disrupted the game, but after a brief break, the Greek fought hard and closed the set.
Isner held on in the second set, and his aggressive hits in the 11th game earned him a service break helping him win the group. In the decider, Tsitsipas converted his only break point of the match to make it 5-3 before the moment of glory arrived.
Tsitsipas treaded inside the baseline and attacked for a long time. Isner, a finalist in Cincinnati in 2013, beat Benjamin Bonzi, Hubert Hurkacz and Sebastian Korda in three sets earlier this week.
Tsitsipas now has a 7-1 record against Americans this year, with his only loss being against Jenson Brooksby in Indian Wells.
The 24-year-old has increased the gap in their ATP Head2Head series record against Isner, which reads 5-2. He will now meet the top seed, who has a 7-2 lead in their ATP Head2Head series.
Borna Coric enters his third Masters 1000 Semi-Final
Borna Coric has reached his first ATP Masters 1000 final since 2019 by grabbing a highly one-sided win 6-4 6-4 against Felix Auger-Aliassime in the quarter-finals.
The Croatian returned to the ATP Tour in March after shoulder surgery and had a fantastic week at Cincinnati, which included a win against Rafael Nadal.
The World number 152 is the second-lowest-ranked Cincinnati semi-finalist since the inception of the Pepperstone ATP Rankings in 1973. Now, he has jumped 86 places to number 66 on the list.
A win could land him on number 29 as he continues the bid for his first Masters 1000 title. Coric maintained a brilliant first serve and won 31 of 32 first delivery points (97 per cent).
He didn't even face a single break point and didn't concede even a deuce in all the games he played. Coric made nine break chances in five return games and broke in the third game of the opening set and the seventh of the next.
The Canadian staved off two match points against Jannik Sinner on Thursday but couldn't harness the same energy against Coric.
His victories against Nadal and Auger-Aliassime have earned the Croatian a record of defeating two Top 10 players in a tournament for the third time.
He will encounter Carlos Alcaraz in Saturday's semi-finals.
