Tennis News: Rafael Nadal withdraws from Canada Masters 1000
Rafael Nadal has announced his decision to withdraw from National Bank Open set to take place in Montreal, Canada, as he has still not recovered from an abdominal tear at this year’s Wimbledon during his quarterfinal clash with Taylor Fritz
The 36-year-old Spaniard secured a remarkable five-set victory during the clash against his American opponent on July 6 despite fighting through the pain due to his injury.
However, he was forced to withdraw from the clash with Nick Kyrgios in the semi-final because of the injury. He still has not yet recovered completely, inducing him to withdraw from ATP Masters 1000 event in Montreal.
In an announcement through team Cannada, Rafael Nadal said, “I have been practicing for a while now without serving and started with serves four days ago. Everything has been going well. However, yesterday, after my normal practice, I felt a slight bother on my abdominal, and today, it was still there.”
The host city of the Canada Masters 1000 alternates between Toronto and Montreal every year.
The 22-time Grand Slam champion Rafael Nadal has won the title at Cannada Masters 1000, also known as National Bank Open, Presented by Rogers, five times, with three of the titles coming in Montreal and two in Toronto.
Rafael Nadal is having a fantastic season despite missing all the events in April due to a cracked rib and his ongoing abdominal issue. He lifted the trophies at the 2022 Australian Open and French Open and has a win-loss record of 35-3 for the ongoing season.
Director of the Canada Masters 1000 event, Eugene Lapierre, said, “We are obviously disappointed that Rafael will not be with us this year. A five-time champion of our tournament and the last men’s champion in Montreal in 2019, fans were obviously eager to see him back in action at the IGA Stadium.”
World No. 1 Daniil Medvedev is the defending champion at the Canada Masters 1000, the third oldest event on the ATP Tour. The ATP 1000 event will take place in Montreal from August 7 to 14, and the draw will be on August 6.
