Tennis News: Are Barbora Krejcikova and Katerina Siniakova the best in doubles tennis?
It's fair to say that doubles tennis doesn't quite get the coverage or generate as much interest among casual fans as much as singles action does. However, that doesn't mean a shortage of top-level talent in the doubles division
Czech Republic pair Barbora Krejcikova and Katerina Siniakova are proof of that. After all, the pair only recently completed a career Grand Slam and the Golden Slam with their win in the US Open final.
Indeed, one is tempted to think they might have done a calendar Grand Slam too – they won both the Australian Open and Wimbledon Open before the US Open. They only pulled out of their French Open defence due to Krejcikova testing positive for COVID-19.
What's more, they also won the doubles gold medal at the Tokyo Olympics, meaning that they have well and indeed won it all in the sport.
Yet the fire to accomplish more still burns within the duo, who have no intentions of going their separate ways soon.
"I believe that next time we go to another big tournament, we'll have the motivation to fight again. It will be a new result. Just try to win more Slams and do well," Krejcikova said after their US Open win.
As of now, there is arguably only one central record for these two to chase – the overall record for the most number of Grand Slam titles as a pair.
That record still belongs to the iconic duo of Martina Navratilova and Pam Shriver, who won 8 titles as a pair. Amazingly, that is a record that no one has yet touched.
Yet, if Krejcikova and Siniakova continue to play as a duo, they can break this record and make it their own. After all, both are only 26 years old and can easily play for several years.
There's also the fact that few can match them currently as far as their contemporaries go. That'sThat's not to say there are no doubles specialists around; far from it.
Kristina Mladenovic and Caroline Garcia are decent, whereas Bethanie Mattek-Sands and Lucie Safarova won 5 Grand Slams together.
But Mladeonovic and Garcia have only won two Slams together, with the former even teaming with Timea Babos on occasion. Mattek-Sands and Safarova, on the other hand, last won a Slam together in 2017.
Krejcikova and Siniakova, however, have been winning Slams together since 2018. Indeed, they've only lost one Grand Slam final as a unit.
Therefore, it is safe to say that, as things stand, they remain the most incredible women's doubles pair in the game – and of their generation, given the relatively short time they've taken to notch up all of these accomplishments.
And, given the two are not done accomplishing things as a pair, it seems that no record – not even that of Navratilova and Shriver, which has stood for quite a long time.
