Tennis News: Infosys Hall of Fame Open -Andy Murray cruises past Sam Querrey
Former World No. 1 Andy Murray cruised past Sam Querrey of America in straight sets at the Infosys Hall of Fame Open opening round at the International Tennis Hall of Fame in Newport, Rhode Island, on July 13
No. 6 seed Andy Murray marked his return to Infosys Hall of Fame Open after 16 years with a comfortable 6-2, 6-0 victory against home favourite Sam Querrey. The victory improved the record of the 35-year-old Briton on grass for the season to 6-2. The two defeats came against Matteo Berrettini at the Stuttgart Open and John Isner in the second round of Wimbledon.
Andy Murray dominated his American opponent from the very beginning of the match. He dictated the play to drag Sam Querrey into long rallies and converted all six of his break point opportunities. Murray won five aces and 76% of the points on the first serve compared to two aces and 43% on the first serve by Sam Querrey to seal his victory with a second set bagel.
In an on-court interview, Andy Murray said, "It's amazing to be back here and playing on this court again after 16 years. A lot has happened in that time: four kids, married and all that stuff. But I am happy to be back."
He further added, "I've had many issues with injuries the last four or five years. You never know how close you are to the end, but I'm aware I'm getting towards the end of my career, so I make the most of every match and every tournament I play now".
Andy Murray will lock horns with Max Purcell of Australia in the second round. The 24-year-old advanced to the second round after winning a hard-fought 6-3, 1-6, 7-5 clash against Adrian Mannarino of France.
Fifth seed Benjamin Bonzi of France, seventh seed Jiri Vesely of the Czech Republic and eighth-seeded Australian James Duckworth also won their respective matches to advance to the second round.
Andy Murray equals the record of Boris Becker on grass
Andy Murray equalled the 116-25 record of German Legend Boris Becker on grasscourt with his victory in Newport. The record is something that Andy Murray can enjoy after having his career hampered by injuries over the last few years.
