Cincinnati Open: Cameron Norrie begins his campaign with a close win over Holger Rune
World No. 11 Cameron Norrie began his Cincinnati Open campaign with a 7-6(5), 4-6, 6-4 victory over Holger Rune of Denmark at Lindner Family Tennis Center in Cincinnati, Ohio
Cameron Norrie put forth an excellent display of perseverance to counter the explosive groundstrokes of his Danish opponent. The 26-year-old Brit broke Holger Rune with his powerful forehand strikes to secure victory in Cincinnati outdoor hardcourt after two hours and 34 minutes of play.
No. 9 seed Cameron Norrie served five aces, won 73% of the points on the first serve and broke the serve of Holger Rune four times from ten opportunities to book a second-round spot.
The victory improved the win-loss record of Cameron Norrie against Holger Rune to 2-0, with Norrie beating the Dane en route to winning his fourth tour-level title at the Lyon Open earlier this year.
Cameron Norrie will lock horns with fellow Britisher Andy Murray in the second round of the Western & Southern Open on August 17.
British legend Andy Murray advanced to the second round after beating Stan Wawrinka of Switzerland 7-6(7-3), 5-7, 7-5 to earn his first North-American hard court season victory.
Diego Schwartzman of Argentina also booked a second round after securing a 5-7, 6-4, 6-2 victory against Alex Molcan of Slovakia. The 29-year-old Argentinian will face Aslan Karatsev of Russia in a second-round clash.
Andy Murray feels like he needs to get on top of his fitness before facing Cameron Norrie.
Two-time Western & Southern Open champion Andy Murray overcame cramping issues in the third set to secure his victory against Stan Wawrinka.
World No. 47 Andy Murray suffered consecutive losses at the Washington Open, Montreal Open and Citi Open due to cramping issues.
While talking about his cramping upcoming match with Cameron Norrie, Andy Murray said, "Cam has had a brilliant year, not just the last year but the last 18 months. He has played top-level tennis, very, very consistent. It will be a big test for me."
Andy Murray was not stressing too much and joked about needing a day off. He said, "I am hoping there's a day off. I will ask for one now if not, but it will be a good test for me and another match heading into the US Open."
