Jurgen Klopp: Trent Alexander-Arnold will probably stay as Liverpool's right-back

Trent Alexander-Arnold is unlikely to move into midfield for Liverpool.

Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp has suggested that Trent Alexander-Arnold will continue in his familiar right-back position.

The young talent impressed as a midfielder for England during the Euro 2024 qualifiers last month, leading to speculation about his role for his club as well.

In the previous season, Alexander-Arnold showcased his versatility by operating as an inverted full-back for Liverpool, which involves moving into the centre of the pitch when the team are in possession.

Taking a cue from this, England's manager Gareth Southgate went a step further, deploying Alexander-Arnold as a pure midfielder, even donning the number 10 shirt, during their victories over Malta and North Macedonia.

While both Southgate and Klopp have acknowledged the potential for future midfield starts, Klopp has cautioned that the decision is not straightforward.

As evident in Liverpool's pre-season match against Leicester, Alexander-Arnold assumed his customary right-back role and contributed significantly to the team's impressive 4-0 victory.

The debate over Alexander-Arnold's best position continues, but for now, Klopp appears inclined to utilise his abilities in the right-back position at the start of the upcoming season.

"After we put him in this flexible role, everyone told us he should play completely in midfield without saying why," said Klopp.

"It's a completely different position to the one he played last season, or he played for England, because it's a holding position. You have to organise much more.

"Trent can play the position - it depends on who is on the left and right of him.

"We really thought it was a very good and important thing to do this pre-season. [But] we still want to try it with Trent as a right-back again. Then we'll see how we'll start the season."
