Football Transfer Window : Manchester United's game of poker with Barcelona
Erik ten Hag made the Netherlands international his top transfer goal this summer. He is keen to rebuild United's midfield, with Frankie de Jong playing a pivotal role
According to reports, the former Ajax star is open to reuniting in Manchester with his former manager. However, Manchester United have so far failed to meet Barcelona's asking prices, estimated to be around £51million.
According to reports in Spain, Barcelona is looking for a deal of £80 million. This would help ease the pressure from years of financial mismanagement.
Frankie De Jong was the most valuable asset Xavi would be willing to part ways. He joined the club in 2019 for £75 million.
However, the club received a significant boost in its financial situation over the past 24 hours after the board approved two measures to provide a massive cash injection.
Barcelona's members approved a plan to sell a portion of the team's TV rights and future revenue from merchandise and to license to inject 600 million euros ($631 million) into the debt-ridden Spanish club.
After two seasons of being unable to make significant signings because of crippling debt, the club's president Joan Laporta said the two measures were essential to "generate profits and have positive equity" after the club borrowed 1.3 billion euros (nearly $1.37 billion) at one point.
The two financial measures presented by Laporta were unanimously supported by the club's delegates late Thursday online.
As part of the first sale, 49% of the company Barcelona operates to negotiate licensing rights and will sell merchandise.
It is expected to receive between 200 and 300 million euros ($210 to $315 million). If a repurchase option is offered, Laporta will only listen to offers so that the club can take complete control of those assets later.
The club hopes to earn around 450 million ($473 million) from selling TV rights for 25 years to up to 25% of revenue from Spanish league games.
"We want a Barca that can compete for head to head with those state-owned clubs, or those clubs owned by billionaires," Laporta said while addressing the media.
"We want to compete with the strength of our brand and our members. We don't want to be held back by those who put obstacles in our way."
Frankie de Jong's transfer can help Barcelona with their aim
The vote on Thursday will influence big transfer decisions, such as whether Frenkie de Jong is sold to Manchester United and if can sign Robert Lewandowski from Bayern Munich.
Having these deals in place by July 31 would allow them to raise the €600 million they desire. However, some players would have to be sold, and some salaries would need to be reduced.
Frenkie de Jong is the most likely man to be sold, with Manchester United trying to sign the Dutch midfielder.
The LaLiga runners-up could make a lot of money and reduce their expense wages by selling the 25-year-old.
The board believes that De Jong can raise enough money to enable significant additions to the team if he moves on.
According to some members of the first team, the Barcelona directors are trying to create an environment where the Netherlands midfielder can accept leaving by drip-dripping stories in the local media.
Nonetheless, another source familiar with De Jong says he believes the pressure won't work.
In the medium term, the bill's passage may ease the pressure, but those deadlines of June 30 and July 31 remain.
Barcelona can use the transfer market to prevent significant losses in the 2021-22 accounts if it can raise some money through (BLM, Barca Studios, and future TV rights) before the end of this month. Selling players is another lever Barcelona can use.
