Football Feature: Is A.S. Roma under Jose Mourinho a challenge for the big clubs in the Serie A?
Jose Mourinho, easily considered one of the best coaches in European football to have ever existed, became the head coach of A.S. Roma in the summer of 2021
Immediately after his arrival, he claimed to have understood the club's high ambitions for the future. "It is the same ambition and drive that has always motivated me, and together we want to build a winning project over the upcoming years," he said.
Mourinho agreed to a three-year deal with the Giallorossi, hoping to initiate positive changes that will install them back on the radar in Italy and Europe.
He led his team to the UEFA Europa Conference League trophy on a remarkable evening in Tirana within a year. The football icon has recently signed Paulo Dybala, which piqued the curiosity of the entire football community.
Will the Special One lift A.S.Roma to the top of the game?
Mourinho's trophyless stint at Tottenham was a shocking setback for the coach. His time in Chelsea, Manchester United and Tottenham left a bitter aftertaste that could have been hinting at a possible retirement for Mourinho.
However, the Portuguese manager returned to Italy and took an out-of-form Roma squad under his wing. In August 2021, Mourinho won his first game with Roma, who beat Trabzonspor 2-1 in Turkey.
The win followed another sweet development for the club as they thrashed ACF Florentina 3-1. Despite facing more restrictions and a tighter budget in Italy compared to his time in Tottenham, the Roma boss held on.
Mourinho then made some notable Premier League additions to the club. He welcomed Tammy Abraham over an expensive deal from Chelsea. With 15 Premier League goals for Chelsea under his belt, the former Blue showed his potential in his first season in Italy.
Abraham secured 17 goals in his debut season in Roma, a team that experienced its fair share of highs and lows. Mourinho's side finished behind rivals S.S. Lazio, a contingent that included both young players and experienced men of the game.
However, they savoured remarkable moments in the season. On May 25, 2022, they clashed against Feyenoord in the inaugural final of the Europa Conference League.
Nicolo Zaniolo's only goal 30 minutes into the game brought in their first silverware since 2008. Mourinho then attempted to alleviate the misery caused by Francisco Totti's departure by bringing Paulo Dybala.
Jose Mourinho beat Europe's elite to sign star forward
Dybala was JuventusF.C.'s top all-time foreign scorer, but he stopped being the star player as the club's ambition skyrocketed. So on July 20 2022, the forward signed a contract with Roma.
Dybala secured a crucial goal in the Europa League and netted twice against A.C. Monza. His attacking prowess coexists with his ability to enhance the attacking forces of his team.
Andrea Belotti, Nemanja Matic, and Gini Wijnaldum are expected to thrive under Mourinho's leadership. Although the 59-year-old has a lot to lament over, his days of coaching aren't over.
He has more victories to script over an illustrious career that significantly overshadows the low points in his undertakings as a coach. A.S. Roma now has the chance to make it big.
