Hockey News: Will youngster Sanjay make the difference for India in FIH Hockey Men's Pro League 2022-23?
The Indian Men's Hockey Team has made new additions to the team, and Sanjay's future seems promising, considering how far he has come. He was recently nominated at the 2021-2022 FIH Star Awards for the FIH Rising Star of the Year (Men)
The young defender served as the Vice-Captain of the Indian Junior Men's Hockey Team that came fourth in the FIH Junior Hockey World Cup in Bhubaneswar, Odisha, where he netted eight times, the highest for the team.
Sanjay looked back at the nomination and remarked that he was elated to have been listed. "But more than me, this nomination is down to the full team effort as we have all been working together, and without everyone's participation, getting recognised would be difficult," a modest Sanjay admitted.
The young player is brilliant as a drag-flicker and is not shy to admit that it feels good to be recognised for hard work. He is immensely grateful for being rewarded for the hours of training and effort he put in by allowing him the chance to win a top award in the sport of hockey.
"It always motivates a young player like me to keep up the intensity as there could be more recognition, but also it will translate into better results for the National team," he remarked thoughtfully.
Sanjay is in good form post-transition to the senior team
After moving to the senior team, he has continued to be in top form and actively boosted his side at the Men's FIH Hockey 5s, netting four goals as India became the champions.
He called the tournament a good experience, albeit challenging due to the tweak in its format. He thoroughly enjoyed his first time with the senior team, and the victory served as a cherry on the cake.
Sanjay wants to impress the Indian Men's Hockey Team coaches led by Chief Coach Graham Reid as preparations for the 2022-23 FIH Hockey Men's Pro League are in full swing.
His capacity to score goals has not wavered despite entering a more competitive atmosphere after shifting to the senior circuit. As revealed, he has not fully settled into the Indian Men's Hockey Team set-up.
He was vital in India's title-winning run at the Men's FIH Hockey 5s. In his words, he has now resolved to work hard in training and become the best version of himself.
In phase one of the 2022-23 FIH Men's Hockey Pro League, India will compete in six games, three against New Zealand and Spain, from October 28 to November 6 in Bhubaneshwar, India.
It remains to be seen whether Sanjay would score, but chances look suitable for the determined youngster.
