Commonwealth Games: Indian women’s hockey advanced to the semifinals after beating Canada 3-2
The Indian women’s hockey won against Canada 3-2 in a Commonwealth Games match at the University of Birmingham Hockey and Squash Centre in Birmingham, United Kingdom, on August 2 to book a semifinal spot
The victory secured a top two finish in Pool A for India. Within the regulation time, Salima Tete in the 3rd minute, Navneet Kaur in the 22nd minute and Lalremsiami in the 51st minute were the goalscorers for India.
In contrast, Brienne Stairs in the 23rd minute and Hannah Haughn in the 39th-minute score for Canada.
Indian started aggressively and won a penalty corner in the third minute of the opening quarter. Salima Tete slotted the ball into the net to make it 1-0 for India after receiving the ball from Navneet Kaur.
The Indian squad continued building pressure to extend the lead as Vandana Katariya made an excellent run through the left flank but failed to convert.
India carried on with the momentum in the second quarter and kept control of the ball. Navneet Kaur doubled the lead for India in the 22nd minute after receiving a fantastic pass from Lalremsiami.
Just one minute later, Canada earned a penalty corner. Brienne Stairs took the shot and slotted the ball into the net. The first half ended with a 2-1 lead for India. The Candian squad penetrated the India circle as they hunted for an equalizer but missed the shot.
India took control of the ball early into the second half. Lalremsiami penetrated the Canadian circle with a quick charge on the right flank, but the Canadian defence stood firm and denied her the opportunity.
Hannah Haughn sent the ball into the net with an excellent penalty corner flick in the 39th minute to level the score. The Canadian squad won consecutive penalty corners in the final minute of the third quarter but failed to break past the Indian defensive line.
