Trivia/Gossip/Best of Commentators MI vs DC
Rishabh Pant's dropping Brevis' sitter followed by DRS blunder against Tim David
Delhi Capitals paid the ultimate price for a DRS blunder by captain Rishabh Pant. Mumbai Indians defeated Delhi capitals by five wickets to put them out of IPL 2022. DC looked in much control, but Rishabh Pant's decision to not review a caught-behind shout against MI's power-hitter Tim David cost them 34-runs coming from his bat at a crucial juncture of the match.
This blunder came after he had already dropped a simple sitter off South African big striker Dewald Brevis. However, Shardul Thakur ensured that the damage didn't extend and took the batter on the third delivery of the 15th over. And in the very next ball, Thakur bowled an excellent delivery outside off-stump, which looked like David missed while pushing to covers. But there was a noise heard; however, Pant, in no time, refused to go for a DRS. The two mistakes cost Delhi their fortunes in reaching the playoffs.
In the post-match conference, Rishabh Pant said, "I thought there was something but everyone standing in the circle was not convinced enough so I was asking them should we go up, and at the end, I didn't take the review."
Ravi Shastri criticised the decision by calling it a no-brainer. He said, "Ok there's Rishabh Pant, Shardul but what are the other 8 doing there? Common sense demands five overs left, two reviews, Tim David has come in, you've taken a wicket and you have a great opportunity of getting two wickets quickly, and still, 5 overs to go and you have the upper hand – you had to take it. I mean, it's a no-brainer."
Wasim Jaffer tweeted, "Last year in Qualifier Rishabh gave Tom Curran the final over instead of Rabada, and that cost DC dearly. And tonight he didn't review Tim David's caught behind. Two decisions he will regret dearly. DC fans must be wondering what could have been.. #MIvDC #IPL2022."
While criticism surrounded Rishabh Pant's captaincy and decisions on the field, their coach Ricky Ponting defended the young player by saying, "He is just a young man and still learning captaincy. Being captain of a T20 team, especially in IPL, which is a high-pressure tournament, is not [an] easy thing to do and unfortunately, every single thing you do will be scrutinised. He certainly got my full backing."
